During the course of our last comprehensive Needs Assessment study, the ABUW conducted several Community Forums — discussion groups — with key leaders, agency representatives and other significant individuals from the Boxborough and Acton communities to gain insight into the health and human service issues of greatest concern.
The 2001 study identified the following five areas as the highest priority concerns:
• Shortage of affordable housing
• Shortage of local transportation options
• Lack of social/recreational opportunities for children aged 13–18
• Issues facing non-English speaking residents
• Lack of awareness of health and human services and programs that exist to serve local residents
These sessions were so meaningful, and powerful, for all participants, that in 2004, the Community Outreach Committee of the ABUW decided to begin sponsoring these sessions on a regular basis.
