Building Community                                                                            April 2010
Dear Neighbor,

We are hearing loud and clear from Acton and Boxborough that the need for services in our towns is exploding. More people then ever before need safety net basics such as utilities, support for housing and food, counseling, and mental health and abuse services.
  • 70% increase in the number of people needing one-time emergency financial aid to pay bills
  • 20% increase in elder abuse, neglect, self neglect and financial exploitation reports
  • 22% increase in domestic violence police reports have been filed in Acton
  • Double the domestic violence police reports filed in Boxborough
But you can help! Your donation to the ABUW is carefully stewarded; we ensure that funds reach the greatest need. Your gift makes a difference:
  • $100 provides 3 weeks of Meals on Wheels delivering good nutrition and a daily check to a home-bound elder
  • $100 provides enough yogurt, cheese, butter, eggs and fruit for 30 clients at a food pantry
  • $50 covers outreach intervention to the disabled and elderly at risk for losing their housing
  • $25 supports a local senior in getting prescription drugs and health coverage
If you've already donated, thank you! If you have not, please consider donating today!

The ABUW is calling on you to help form teams for the 8th annual Community Chest Challenge! Alongside teams from the Concord-Carlisle and Maynard Community Chests, ABUW teams will pedal, run and paddle through historic Concord and Carlisle. The spirit of the race is meeting a challenge through teamwork as demonstrated by the efforts of the many human service organizations supported by the ABUW and the Community Chests.

Please support the ABUW by creating and registering a team, participating as an individual, or sponsoring an individual or team.

Local Business Focus Group Held
Focus Dictionary Definition
The ABUW recently held a successful focus group with local businesses. The purpose was to develop plans for forming partnerships with the local business community. The meeting was very productive and several plans emerged from the discussion.

A few ways businesses can get involved include: starting a United Way Workplace Campaign, sponsoring events or participants such as the upcoming Community Chest Challengeor a community forum, and employee volunteer opportunities such as Community Day of Caring.

To find out more about forming a partnership with the ABUW, please call our office at 978-263-1777 or email abuw@abuw.org.

Check-In Service.

The Acton Police Department maintains a free, automated phone call program for people living alone or for those who are caring for someone who may not be able to get help when you are not around. You choose the time of day to receive a call. As long as you answer the phone, nothing further happens. If you do not answer the phone after several attempts, the police will come and check on you. You can turn the service off when you are away and are not available.

For more information or to enroll, call Carol Steiner, Outreach Coordinator, at 978-264-9643.
