Dear Neighbor,
Thank you for helping us build a strong and
caring community. This newsletter highlights key programs that
express the cooperative spirit of our community. From the high
school leaders in the Youth in Philanthropy program to the many
human service agencies and elected officials around the table at the
Community Forum, there is a high level of energy bringing people of
Acton and Boxborough together. All are dedicated to crafting
solutions to meet crucial local needs.
What a great way to begin the New
Year!

Teen
Philanthropists With Heart & Determination
YIP Grant Allocations
2012
by Aashika Nagarajan, ABRHS
Student
Five boxes of pizza, six bottles of soda, 13
students, $10,000, and a list of 15 nonprofit organizations. We were
simply a group of high school students eating and chatting in a
classroom at 5:00 PM. However, our mission at hand was far fromm the
casual appearance of a pizza party. In those two hours, we would
determine the fate of ten thousand dollars in donations and, in the
process, directly impact our community.

As members of Youth in Philanthropy, we
undertook the task of funding a select number of organizations out
of the 11 that sent us proposals. Initially, many of us had a cloudy
understanding of the term "philanthropy." While some associated the
word with money, others defined the term as charity work. As we
progressed from day one to the final days of deliberation, we built
upon our initial definitions and learned that philanthropy entails
much more than we imagined. |

Forum Report: December 2011
Measuring the
Year
by
Beth Farley, ABUW Board of Directors
5 hundred 25 thousand 6 hundred
minutes,
5 hundred 25 thousand
moments so dear.
5 hundred 25 thousand 6
hundred minutes
How do you measure,
measure a year?
"Seasons of Love" lyrics
from the musical RENT
For representatives from local social service agencies, law
enforcement, government and the faith community at the ABUW
Community Forum on Dec.1st, "measuring" the year meant a lively
discussion on the issues and trends of the last 12 months. The
Community Forum, sponsored by ABUW, provides a unique opportunity
for all to hear what others have experienced, assess if those
experiences are unique or common across the towns and understand
where the resources exist that can help solve or ameliorate the
various human service needs facing the community. In a round table
discussion, attendees shared updates on the issues they have seen
affecting our youth, families and elders In Acton and
Boxborough.
There was strong consensus that the fragile economy continues
to provide the backdrop to a number of problems in our area;
joblessness translating into homelessness, domestic violence, stress
and other mental health concerns. |
